Join the Cleveland Foundation and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards as we host Geraldine Brooks for a conversation about “Horse,” a 2023 Anisfield-Wolf winner for fiction. It centers on a stallion that ignited U.S. horse-racing fervor before the Civil War.
Anisfield-Wolf Juror Joyce Carol Oates said “Horse” was “a truly poignant tale and very richly developed.” Juror Rita Dove called it beautifully written: “I have nothing but praise for her evocative descriptions of Black jockeys and trainers.”
Geraldine Brooks is drawn to the implausibility of history, a spark in all six of her novels. They include her first, “A Year of Wonders,” now translated into 25 languages. “March” imagines the Civil War years of the idealistic, absent father of “Little Women.” It won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Her nonfiction includes the best-selling exploration of Islamic women’s lives, “Nine Parts of Desire.”
